Falling behind in school is a major obstacle for any child to overcome, as is living in an at-risk neighborhood, that’s why each of our centers provides hundreds of hours of free homework help, academic enrichment, and mentoring to children. Kids come to The Leaven so they can learn, play, and grow, away from crime and other negative influences that surround their neighborhoods.

Tutoring and Mentoring

Our tutoring programs have proven to help students to excel academically. We align our curriculum with each school’s reading programs so students have a seamless transition from the classroom to our after-school sites. Tutors also act as mentors, who work with students to improve their reading comprehension, math skills, and help them complete their homework.

H.E.A.L.

H.E.A.L. stands for Health Eating, Active Living. Each day for 30-45 minutes, our students enjoy a healthy snack and participate in a physical activity.

S.T.E.A.M.

Through our STEAM program, we develop our students’ creativity and knowledge in five disciplines—science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. This program includes robotics and art education, and involves field trips to local art museums and other educational venues.

Community Outreach

The Leaven Gives Back teaches children that helping others is fun and important! Once each week, students work with local peace officers, schools, and charities on various community projects. Through food drives for the hungry, cleaning up litter, or making valentines for America’s service men and women, our students learn that you’re never too young to help another person!

Summer Success

Summer Success is The Leaven’s answer to the “summer slide”—the tendency for academic skills to become rusty during the summer break. During our six-week Summer Success program, we help students maintain and build on all they learned during the school year. Students also participate in fun, unique, and life-changing learning opportunities.
